A working capital loan finances the timing gap between paying for materials, production and expenses and receiving money from customers. A bank's assessment is based on the actual business cycle—not simply the amount of sales.
1. What banks generally examine
- Business activity, operating history, management and credit conduct.
- Sales supported by GST returns, bank credits, orders and financial statements.
- Stock levels, ageing of receivables, trade creditors and operating cycle.
- Net working capital, existing bank limits, other borrowings and cash flow.
- Availability and quality of current assets and the purpose of finance.
Eligibility criteria and assessment methods differ across lenders and facility sizes.
2. Understand the operating cycle
Example: inventory is held for 45 days, customers pay in 60 days and suppliers allow 30 days. The net funding cycle is 45 + 60 − 30 = 75 days. A longer cycle generally increases financing needs, other things being equal.
Seasonality, obsolete stock, slow debtors and related-party receivables may affect what a bank accepts as eligible current assets.
3. Illustrative turnover-based calculation
One commonly discussed MSME assessment approach uses projected turnover to estimate working capital. For learning purposes, suppose projected annual turnover is ₹2 crore:
| Illustrative item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Projected turnover | ₹200 lakh |
| Working capital requirement at 25% | ₹50 lakh |
| Borrower's contribution at 5% | ₹10 lakh |
| Indicative bank finance at 20% | ₹40 lakh |
Important: These percentages illustrate a recognised turnover-based approach; they do not mean every MSME automatically qualifies for 20% of turnover. The applicable regulatory instructions, lender policy, actual business need and appraisal control the sanction.
4. Eligibility versus drawing power
Sanctioned limit is the credit facility approved by the bank. Drawing power is the amount currently available against eligible stocks and receivables after stipulated deductions and margins. Usable funds can be lower than the sanctioned limit.
Example: A cash-credit account has a ₹40 lakh sanction but eligible drawing power of ₹31 lakh. The customer generally cannot treat the full ₹40 lakh as immediately drawable merely because it is sanctioned.

5. Ways to improve a loan application
- Prepare realistic monthly sales and cash-flow projections.
- Reconcile GST returns, bank credits and reported turnover.
- Provide debtor ageing and identify overdue or disputed balances.
- Document stock valuation, creditors and existing borrowings.
- Show how the proposed limit supports the operating cycle.
Frequently asked questions
Is turnover alone enough to obtain working capital?
No. Banks also evaluate financial strength, conduct, current assets, credit risk and policy requirements.
Can a loss-making business receive working capital?
It depends on the cause of losses, future viability, liquidity and the lender's assessment.
Is a cash credit limit a term loan?
No. A cash credit facility is typically a revolving working capital arrangement, whereas a term loan has an agreed repayment structure.
