PMEGP Loan Scheme 2026: Eligibility, Subsidy and Application

Understand the PMEGP scheme, margin money subsidy, bank finance and application steps with practical illustrations.

This educational guide explains key considerations for Indian entrepreneurs and small businesses. Confirm current scheme rules and individual lender requirements before making decisions.

What is PMEGP?

The Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) supports eligible new micro-enterprises through bank finance and margin-money subsidy, administered through designated implementing agencies. It is not a direct cash grant paid to applicants. The bank assesses the project and decides whether to sanction credit.

Who can apply?

Eligibility depends on the applicant, nature of activity, project cost and prevailing programme guidelines. Existing units generally cannot claim support for an already-established project under the new-unit route. Special-category eligibility, education requirements and project ceilings must be checked against the current official guidelines before applying.

How the financing works

The applicant contributes the prescribed own contribution. The financing bank considers the balance of the project cost, and an eligible margin-money subsidy is handled under scheme rules, including lock-in and adjustment conditions. Do not treat the subsidy as money immediately available to pay suppliers.

Illustrative calculation

Assume an eligible project costs ₹10 lakh and the applicant contributes 10% (₹1 lakh). The remaining ₹9 lakh is the proposed bank-financed component, subject to appraisal. If an applicable scheme subsidy rate were 15%, the indicative margin-money subsidy would be ₹1.50 lakh. This is a mathematical illustration only; actual rates, categories, financing and subsidy handling must follow the latest PMEGP rules.

Documents and application checklist

Prepare identity and address proof, project report, cost quotations, relevant education or category proof where required, premises information, and other records requested by the implementing agency or bank. Apply through the official PMEGP portal and retain the acknowledgement.

Common mistakes

Avoid paying agents who guarantee approval, assuming the subsidy replaces promoter contribution, inflating machinery costs, or ignoring the bank’s repayment-capacity assessment.
